The Matuška brewery from Central Bohemia has won gold at the World Beer Cup 2025 in the USA. Its semi-dark lager, Broumy, triumphed over strong international competition in the Kellerbier/Zwickelbier category.
The family-run Matuška microbrewery (Pivovar Matuška) from the village of Broumy in the Beroun region has achieved great success for Czech beer. At the prestigious World Beer Cup 2025 in the United States, Matuška brewery won a gold medal in the Kellerbier or Zwickelbier category for its semi-dark lager, Broumy.
In the ‘Kellerbier or Zwickelbier’ category, i.e., traditional unfiltered lagers, 55 beers competed. The best-rated lager was Broumy 12° from Pivovar Matuška, which won the gold medal. Silver went to Pilsners are Lagers from the American brewery Benchtop Brewing (Virginia), and bronze was awarded to Karbach Kellerbier from the Texan brewery Karbach Brewing.
Broumy beer is a semi-dark, bottom-fermented lager. It was created to celebrate the brewery’s tenth anniversary and is named after the village in which it is brewed.
The Matuška Brewery was founded on 13 April 2009, Easter Monday, by master brewer Martin Matuška, who has been in the brewing business since 1981. From humble beginnings in a garage, the brewery has now developed into one of the leading Czech microbreweries. It is considered one of the pioneers of top-fermented beers in the Czech Republic—its California and Zlatá Raketa are among the legends of the domestic beer scene.
The brewery’s old brewing kettles can now be found in Karlín, Prague, where they are used to brew local beer at the Dva Kohouti brewery pub, co-owned by Martin’s son, Adam Matuška.

The Brewers Association (BA)—a non-profit trade association that promotes small and independent American craft beer breweries—is the organiser of the World Beer Cup. The awards ceremony was held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, alongside the Craft Brewers Conference® & BrewExpo America®.
In 14 sessions spanning seven days, a panel of 265 judges from 37 countries methodically evaluated 8,375 entries from 1,761 breweries and cideries from 49 countries and presented 349 awards.
The gold medal at the World Beer Cup is a great success for Czech breweries and the Czech Republic as a beer country. While the Czech Republic is known as a traditional beer country, modern craft beer competitions are often dominated by North American brands.
