100 years of Prague bus transport: Open day at the Vršovice bus depot

The Prague Public Transport Company invites you to take an exciting look behind the scenes

To mark the 100th anniversary of bus transport in Prague, the Vršovice bus depot will open its doors to visitors on Saturday. A colourful programme will offer entertainment and insights into the history of public transport in the city.

The Vršovice bus depot is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year and invites visitors to explore behind the scenes on Saturday, 21 June 2025, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Visitors can look forward to a comprehensive tour of the vehicle fleet and the charging technology for electric buses. They can also visit workshops including the body shop, tyre service, diagnostics, maintenance planning, paint shop, daily vehicle inspection and assembly pits. Refreshments and entertainment will also be available: a DPP fan shop, a traffic training ground, pedal karts, remote-controlled models and other attractions promise fun for young and old alike.

    A look back at history

Today’s Vršovice bus garage, formerly known as the Michle depot, began operations on 2 April 1955 as a trolleybus depot. From 5 October 1964, buses on lines 101 and the newly established 134 were also stationed here. To accommodate the growing number of vehicles, the first parking area for 60 buses was built on the east side of the depot in 1965. Additional parking areas followed in 1970 to the north of the depot and near the street ‘U Vršovického hřbitova’. Trolleybuses were withdrawn from service in Vršovice on 30 June 1968, and since then the depot has been used exclusively for buses.

In the 1990s, the two garage halls were used solely for vehicle maintenance. In 2003, the roadways and the hall for daily maintenance and inspection were extensively renovated, and a fourth fuelling station was built. Since 2014, the site has also housed the fleet for internal transport. In 2021, 14 charging points were installed for Škoda E’CITY 36BB electric buses. Since January 2022, these electric buses have been operating on lines 124, 154 and 213.

A rolling anniversary through the streets of the capital

On Sunday, 22 June 2025, the streets of Prague will be transformed into a living history book of public transport: a festive bus parade will commemorate 100 years of continuous bus service in the Czech capital. The colourful parade will start at around 10 a.m. at Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí). More information can be found here.
