Nábřeží Karla Schwarzenberga: Prague Names Riverbank After Late Diplomat and Politician

Karel Schwarzenberg dedicated his life to serving Czech society, which he not only loved but also actively shaped

Prague is paying tribute to one of its most influential politicians: a section of the embankment on the Lesser Town, between Charles Bridge and the Lichtenstein Palace (Lichtenštejnský palác), will in future bear the name Karel Schwarzenberg.

The City Council approved the naming on 1 September to honour the diplomat and politician who passed away in 2023.

The proposal came from the administration of Prague’s first district. According to the documents passed by the councillors, the aim is not only to keep Schwarzenberg’s memory alive but also to make navigation around the city easier.

Terezie Radoměřská, Mayor of Prague 1 and a relative of Schwarzenberg, described the site as small yet picturesque, located right next to Charles Bridge. Naming it Nábřeží Karla Schwarzenberga recognises his connection to the historic heart of the Czech capital while reflecting his modest character. She confirmed that she had already received approval for the use of the name from his son and head of the family, Jan Schwarzenberg. The initiative was also supported by a citizens’ petition.

“Karel Schwarzenberg devoted his life to the Czech people and the state, bringing dignity, character, and a firm grounding in Western values to Czech politics. His reputation extended far beyond the country’s borders, yet his heart always remained in the Czech Republic,” said Jiří Pospíšil (TOP 09), Deputy Mayor for Culture.

Karel Schwarzenberg was a prominent figure in Czech and European politics, diplomacy, and culture. He dedicated his life to serving Czech society, which he not only loved but actively influenced. As Foreign Minister and as Chancellor to President Václav Havel, he played a role in shaping the democratic form of the Czech Republic after 1989. He was well known for his firm stance on human rights, and for his promotion of culture and civil society.

Schwarzenberg passed away on 12 November 2023 in Vienna at the age of 85.
