Flora, one of Prague’s busiest metro stations, is getting a new look. The station will undergo comprehensive renovations and be made fully accessible over the coming months.
Two months after work began on the complete renovation of Flora Metro Station and its accessibility upgrade, the project has entered a crucial phase. Yesterday, 4 December, coinciding with the feast day of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners, the so-called “mining method” – the excavation and tunnelling process for the future lifts – began. Symbolically, a small statue of Saint Barbara was consecrated, which will watch over the works underground.
At the same time, preparatory dismantling works are underway in parts of the station, both in the vestibule and on the platform, while the station remains in operation. From Monday, 2 February 2026, Flora Station will be closed completely for around ten months to allow all planned works to be carried out.

The consecration of the Barbara statue was conducted by Father Jan Houkal from the nearby Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (kostel Nejsvětějšího Srdce Páně). Afterwards, Aleš Teichmann, project manager for the tunnelling works, placed the wooden figure in a casing at the shaft entrance, from where it is intended to symbolically protect the construction works.
Currently, the construction pit is being secured to allow the start of the mining works. Initially, a shaft will be excavated from the surface down to a depth of 22 metres. This will be followed by tunnels with a total length of over 60 metres, which will later serve as connecting passages between the lifts. Finally, two additional shafts will be constructed for a lift and an emergency exit, linking the interchange level with the platform. In total, around 3,900 cubic metres of excavated material will be moved.

In parallel, partial dismantling of the station is taking place while it remains operational. In the vestibule, most of the ceiling panels have already been removed and wall cladding dismantled. This partial dismantling will continue in the coming weeks.
After the complete closure of the station in early February 2026, extensive renovation work will begin. This will include, among other things, sealing against water ingress, renewing the power supply, and replacing all cabling, escalators, ventilation systems, and lighting with modern, energy-efficient versions.

The reopening of Flora station is scheduled for approximately one year later. The newly installed lifts are expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2028.
