Step by Step Towards Redesign: Prague Plans to Revitalise Charles Square

First Preparatory Work to Begin This Autumn

Prague City Council has approved a public tender for the revitalisation of Charles Square (Karlovo náměstí). The first preparatory work will begin this autumn, focusing on enhancing the vitality of the greenery. A comprehensive redesign of the square could then commence within two years.

‘Thanks to this preliminary work, we are one step closer to the complete remodelling of the square, which could begin as early as 2027. We are currently awaiting planning permission. To keep the park accessible and user-friendly, the preparatory work will be divided into two phases, starting during the quieter period—this autumn. The disruption caused by noise and dust will be minimal, and there will be no major interventions in the park. Pavements will remain accessible. The success of the revitalisation depends not only on the quality of the architectural and landscape design but also on the standard of future management and maintenance,’ said Petr Hlaváček, Deputy Mayor for Spatial and Strategic Development.

The preparatory work aims to strengthen the vitality of the green spaces and minimise the impact on trees ahead of the planned comprehensive revitalisation of Charles Square (Karlovo náměstí). The project follows the designs of the German landscape architecture firm Rehwaldt Landschaftsarchitekten in collaboration with the Czech firms BY Architects and PD Filip. The construction work also affects areas where monumental trees and other valuable plants grow, which must not be disturbed.

‘There is no doubt that Charles Square deserves high-quality and well-thought-out care. For me, it was essential that the existing old trees are protected and preserved. Our shared goal is to ensure that the trees are in the best possible condition before the actual reconstruction begins,’ said Jana Komrsková, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Climate Planning.

The total value of the contract is approximately 10 million crowns. In line with future public tenders, the contract will be awarded through an open procedure in accordance with the upper limit regulation. The measures have been approved by the Prague 2 Municipal District and the Environmental Protection and Monument Protection Departments of Prague City Hall.

The revitalisation of Charles Square (Karlovo náměstí) is a long-term project that the capital has been working on in cooperation with Prague 2 since 2010. The square holds particular significance as an extensive green and recreational space in the densely built-up city centre and as a cultural monument.
