The 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship begins today in Stockholm and Herning. The Czech national team, the defending champions, open their campaign against Switzerland — their opponents in last year’s final — and thus face one of the toughest challenges in the group stage right from the start.
Today, Friday 9 May 2025, the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship 2025 gets under way in Stockholm (Sweden) and Herning (Denmark). The Czech national team, as defending champions, play their opening match at 16:20 in Herning against Switzerland. The game is part of preliminary round Group B, in which the Czech Republic will also face Norway, Denmark, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Germany and the USA.
The tournament runs from 9 to 25 May 2025 and is held in Stockholm and Herning. The Czechs are the reigning champions.
Last year, David Pastrňák scored the much-praised goal ten minutes before the end to pave the way to victory for the Czech Republic. In the end, coach Radim Rulík’s team celebrated a well-earned 2–0 victory over Switzerland. This made the Czech Republic only the fifth nation to win the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship on home ice.
