Open Gardens Weekend: Discover Prague’s Green Oases

Visitors can look forward not only to relaxing walks amid nature but also to guided tours, exhibitions, concerts, tastings and a programme for children

For one weekend, garden gates in Prague that are usually closed will open to anyone who loves green spaces, history and architecture. On Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 June 2025, the Open Gardens Weekend (Víkend otevřených zahrad) invites visitors to explore quiet retreats in the Czech capital that are otherwise rarely accessible.

This annual event brings lesser-known or otherwise closed gardens, parks and courtyards to life. Although the event takes place nationwide, Prague plays a special role. The city is home not only to historic castle gardens but also to modern nature projects and communal green spaces.

    Prague Full of Green Surprises

This year, nearly twenty locations across the city are participating, including the gardens beneath Prague Castle, the Orangery in the Royal Garden, Toulcův Courtyard and the charming garden of Troja Castle. Visitors can look forward not only to relaxing walks amid nature but also to guided tours, exhibitions, concerts, tastings and a programme for children. Some locations invite you to linger in peace and quiet, while others are filled with lively cultural activities.

The idea of open gardens originated in Great Britain, where the ‘Open Garden & Squares Weekend’ quickly gained popularity throughout Europe. In the Czech Republic, the initiative has become a fixed event in June, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

    Not Always Free

Important to know: open gardens do not automatically mean free admission. Although most gardens are accessible without a fee, admission prices are set individually by the operators or owners. It is therefore advisable to check current information on the respective websites before visiting.

The Open Gardens Weekend not only celebrates the beauty of the plant world but also reminds us of the importance of green spaces in the city — as places of relaxation, inspiration and community interaction. A detailed overview of all participating locations, opening hours and accompanying programmes can be found on the official website www.vikendotevrenychzahrad.cz.
