The city of Prague can look back on a successful financial year in 2024. With a significant surplus of almost 23 billion crowns, the Czech capital has once again demonstrated its sound financial management and economic strength.
The financial balance sheet of Prague for 2024 shows a clearly positive result. As of 31 December 2024, the city recorded a surplus of 22.96 billion crowns. This outcome underscores the stable financial management of the Czech capital.
Total revenue amounted to 141.02 billion crowns, corresponding to 115.38 per cent of the adjusted budget. Expenditure totalled 118.06 billion crowns, divided between current expenditure of 91.52 billion crowns and investment expenditure of 26.54 billion crowns.
Zdeněk Kovářík, Prague’s Finance Councillor, commented: “Prague closed the 2024 financial year with a very good result. Revenue development was solid, while expenditure was managed in a disciplined manner. This enabled us to close the year with a real surplus. We have already earmarked a large part of these funds for financing important investments and strengthening the city’s financial stability in the coming years.”
The expenditure breakdown shows that current expenditure accounted for around 77.5 per cent of total expenditure. While the approved budget for these items was 92.64 billion crowns, the adjusted budget was increased to 99.15 billion crowns. However, only 91.52 billion crowns was actually spent. Investment expenditure accounted for just under 22.5 per cent. Here, the approved plan was 27.37 billion crowns, the adjusted plan was 39.52 billion crowns, and the actual expenditure was 26.54 billion crowns.
The largest share of current expenditure was on education, youth, and sport, with 31.64 billion crowns (97.42 per cent of the adjusted budget), followed by transport with 28.41 billion crowns (95.91 per cent). Transport also topped the list of investment expenditure with 8.19 billion crowns (80.53 per cent), followed by education with 3.42 billion crowns (74.47 per cent).
According to City Councillor Kovářík, Prague has thus confirmed its ability to manage its finances responsibly, transparently, and with a view to long-term sustainability. Further details and the presentation (CZ) can be found here.
