A summer holiday in the Czech Republic remains the first choice for many. According to a recent survey, two-thirds of the population prefer to holiday in their own country – with growing interest in regional cuisine and active recreation.
The majority of Czechs are planning to spend their holidays at home again this summer. According to a recent survey by the state agency CzechTourism, 65 percent of respondents intend to spend their summer break within the Czech Republic – four percentage points more than last year. The regions of South Bohemia, South Moravia and Central Bohemia are particularly popular.
What stands out is the increasing interest in regional cuisine: more than 80 percent of respondents under the age of 49, as well as those with academic backgrounds, say they actively seek out local specialities when travelling. Alongside experiencing nature and visiting cultural landmarks, the culinary aspect is playing an ever more important role for many.
Shorter Trips, but Quality Use of Leisure Time
The average holiday duration has decreased slightly compared to last year – from ten to nine days. Nevertheless, many people want to make conscious use of their time off: almost half of those surveyed plan to explore new destinations within the Czech Republic, while just over a quarter will return to familiar places. Holidays with the family (46%) or with a partner (31%) remain the most common options. Cars and motorcycles are the most popular means of transport (70%). Guesthouses top the list of preferred accommodation, with price, location and personal experience being the key deciding factors.

Active Holidays Still in Fashion
Recreation with light physical activity continues to be popular. Hiking (76%) and walking (64%) top the list, followed by water sports and water parks (32%), and cycling (30%). In contrast, classic relaxation holidays are important to just 17 percent. Cultural sightseeing (16%) and family-oriented leisure activities (13%) are also part of the holiday plans for many.
South Bohemia Remains the Favourite
People aged between 40 and 49 (71%) and those with a monthly income between 20,000 and 25,000 koruna are particularly likely to opt for domestic holidays. South Bohemia is the most popular region (27%), followed by South Moravia and Central Bohemia, each with 12 percent. Areas known for spa facilities, cultural attractions and mountain landscapes are also in demand.
Slight Drop in Foreign Travel
Compared to last year, interest in foreign travel has declined slightly: 57 percent of respondents are planning a trip abroad – three percentage points fewer than in 2023. Financial uncertainty is the most frequently cited reason for staying home (61%). For a quarter of participants, the atmosphere and familiarity of their home region also argue against going abroad. However, interest in foreign travel remains above average among younger, educated and high-income individuals.
