The Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) has begun construction of the highest road bridge in the Czech Republic near Plasy. At 87.3 metres, the bridge will be significantly higher than the previous record holder and is scheduled for completion in 2028. It forms part of a new bypass that will relieve traffic through the town.
The Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) has commenced building the highest road bridge in the Czech Republic. The bridge, nearly 500 metres in length, is part of the future bypass project near Plasy in the Pilsen region, on the I/27 road. With a height of 87.3 metres at its highest point, it will surpass the previous record holder, the Vysočina Bridge on the D1, which stands at 77 metres.
Construction costs amount to approximately 571 million crowns (excluding VAT). The bridge and bypass are due for completion by 2028, with construction work on the bypass section set to begin this autumn.
The impressive structure spans the wide Střela valley between Pilsen and Žatec. The 180-metre-wide monolithic concrete arch, with a roadway above it, will be particularly striking. The bridge will be 12.6 metres wide and, in addition to the roadway, will feature a three-metre-wide footpath and cycle path with a viewing platform incorporating transparent floors — a tourist highlight on the new transport route.

“The structure is the most demanding challenge on the new bypass near Plasy. In addition to its functionality, the location also offers an attractive view,” said Transport Minister Martin Kupka.
The bypass is designed to relieve the heavily congested section of the I/27 road, which currently runs through the centre of Plasy and is characterised by tight bends and gradients. Up to 10,000 vehicles use the route daily, including an increasing number of trucks. The new 5.6-kilometre bypass will divert traffic away from the town centre. Another key feature is the new Babina junction.
Alongside this major project, the ŘSD is preparing further bypasses on the I/27 in the region, including construction near Kaznějov, Rybnice and Třemošná.
