Prague Botanical Garden presents exhibition on the history of exotic plants

The exhibition answers many questions that plant lovers may have asked themselves: Where do geraniums, orchids and dahlias actually come from?

Exotic plants, historical discoveries and botanical passion: From 4 July, the Prague Botanical Garden invites visitors to a summer exhibition on the history of foreign plants in Central Europe.

The summer exhibition at the Prague Botanical Garden shows how plants from distant countries found their way into our gardens. From 4 July, the exhibition invites visitors on a journey through the history of plant cultivation in Central Europe.

The exhibition, which can be seen in the exhibition hall and ornamental gardens until the end of August, highlights the exciting relationship between humans and plants. Visitors will learn how exotic plants from all over the world came to Europe – whether through daring voyages of discovery, botanical curiosity or targeted breeding.

In addition to historical artefacts and living plant specimens, architectural features will also be presented, such as buildings that were specially constructed to preserve sensitive species in our climate.

A look back at history makes it clear that the cultivation of foreign plants began with the great voyages of discovery in the early modern period. Courageous explorers crossed oceans and unknown continents to find previously unknown species – partly out of scientific interest, partly to satisfy the collecting passion of the European nobility. As the range of plants on offer grew, so did the need to create suitable conditions for cultivation in Europe’s cool climate zone. This marked the beginning of an era of botanical innovation and technical developments.

The exhibition answers many questions that plant lovers may have asked themselves at some point: Where do geraniums, orchids, carnivorous plants and dahlias actually come from? Who discovered them and how did they find their way into our gardens? Visitors will not only learn about the plants, but also about the people behind the discoveries – botanists, breeders, designers and adventurers whose passion for the plant world continues to have an impact today.
