At the end of August, the spectacular Red Bull Steep Street skateboarding contest returns to Prague – this time on an even more demanding course in Žitomírská Street. International top riders will battle it out in fast-paced downhill races for victory.
On Saturday, 23 August, Žitomírská Street in Prague 10 will once again become the stage for a breathtaking skateboard race. For the second time, the Red Bull Steep Street Contest will take place in the Czech capital – an extraordinary event that combines high-speed downhill racing with skateboarding. This year promises even more speed, a more challenging track, and unique obstacles for the international top skateboarders competing in Prague.
“After the huge success of the premiere, it was clear to us that there had to be a second edition. It took a bit of time, but now it’s finally happening – and I’m absolutely thrilled. I believe I can ride even more extremely this year, better skaters are coming, and we’re taking the whole thing to the next level,” says Maxim Habanec, founder and one of the main organisers of the race.
Žitomírská – Prague’s Answer to San Francisco’s Skateboarding Hotspots
While last year’s race in 2023 was held at Letná, this year’s course has been moved to Žitomírská Street in Prague 10. With its steep gradient and varied profile, the street is reminiscent of the legendary roads of San Francisco, globally known as skateboarding hotspots. “Žitomírská is perfect for several reasons. Part of the street is very steep, then it levels out up to the crossroads before dropping again. There will be around twelve obstacles, plus additional elements along the sides to give the riders creative freedom for original tricks,” Habanec explains.
Speed and Style Decide the Winner
The competition is judged on a combination of speed, originality, and the difficulty of the tricks. Each rider can score a maximum of 100 points, from which the time taken is then subtracted. This results in an overall score that reflects both trick quality and speed. A key rule: the foot must not leave the deck during the run. “You don’t brake with your sole – only by drifting. If you fall, you’re allowed to carry on, but the time penalty pretty much wipes out any chance of winning,” Habanec adds.

Skateboarding Elite Gathers in Prague
Around sixteen riders are expected to compete, most of them from abroad – with all continents represented. Among them are Douwe Macare from the Netherlands, winner of the first Red Bull Steep Street and Dutch champion in 2019. From the USA comes 19-year-old Jiro Platt, one of the most promising talents in today’s scene. Travelling from South Africa is Brandon Valjalo, his country’s first Olympic skateboarder. He competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics just two days after breaking his wrist and finished 12th in Paris 2024. Valjalo is a two-time African champion and four-time national champion.
“I think anyone could win this year. The race is so unique that it’s hard to predict who the course will suit best. Maybe we’ll even see a surprise from a local rider,” says Maxim Habanec.
