Prague will once again become the centre of the international yoyo scene in August 2025: at the World Championship, more than 300 players from over 40 countries will compete against each other. Among them is Czech vice world champion Jakub Dolejš, one of the favourites for the title.
After eleven years, the world’s yoyo elite is returning to Prague. From 7 to 10 August 2025, the Cubex Centrum in Pankrác will become the meeting place for the international scene. More than 300 participants from 43 countries will battle for the world championship title in modern yoyoing. Around 2,000 spectators are expected on site. Representing the Czech Republic will be 20-year-old vice world champion Jakub Dolejš – one of the top contenders for this year’s title.
“It is an honour for us to bring the world championship tournament back to Prague after eleven years. The city holds a special place in the global yoyo scene – the Czech community has historically been, and still is, one of the most active in Europe,” says Tomáš Bubák, chairman of the Czech Yoyo Association, which is organising the event.

Yoyoing has long since ceased to be just for children – it is a challenging sport that demands precision, creativity, and hours of practice. Athletes spend months perfecting their three-minute routines, synchronising their self-developed tricks perfectly to music. Sixty per cent of the score is based on technical difficulty, forty per cent on overall artistic impression.
“I train several hours every day for my world championship performance. I chose my music almost a year ago – since then I’ve been working on the choreography and the sequence of tricks,” says Jakub Dolejš, who is raising high hopes for a Czech title win.

Modern yoyos are very different from the classic toy: they do not automatically roll back into the hand but are guided by precise movements of hand and string. Many tricks are highly complex and stem from the players’ own creativity. Traditionally, the strongest nations in yoyo sport are the USA, Japan, and South Korea – where Mir Kim is considered one of the favourites for the title. But the Czech scene can compete at the top level: with over 1,000 active players and a well-developed competition system, it is the largest in Europe.
The Czech Yoyo Association (CYA) has existed since 2005 and is dedicated to establishing yoyoing as a recognised sport. Its aim is to attract more players, fans, media attention, and sponsors to this unique freestyle discipline – thereby further increasing the appeal of competitions.
