Burčák Season Starts Later This Year: First Glasses Expected This Weekend

The Burčák season reaches its peak during the annual wine festivals in September

The first Burčák will arrive later than last year because the grapes are ripening more slowly. The popular partially fermented wine is expected to be available for the first time towards the end of this week.

The Burčák season is starting somewhat later this year, but lovers of this early wine can now look forward to the first Burčák of the year. The reason for the delayed start is the cooler weather in July, which has slowed the ripening of the grapes compared to last year. By the end of this week, the first Burčák could be available at market stalls and wine shops.

Some vintners plan to harvest the first grapes on 5th or 6th August, so that they can offer fresh Burčák to all early wine enthusiasts by 8th to 10th August at the latest. Prices are expected to remain unchanged from last year.

That the first Burčák could already be served on 1st August in previous years was rather an exception caused by particularly early ripening. Last year, vintners were able to harvest at the end of July, but this year the ripening is back within the usual timeframe. Wineries that do not primarily specialise in Burčák are planning to harvest even later.

The term “Burčák” corresponds, as in English, to the expression “new wine” – It derives from the verb “burčit,” a dialect variant of “bouřit” – to storm.

The Burčák season culminates at the annual wine festivals in September. In Prague, several events are planned, including the Vinohradské Vinobraní festival on 12th and 13th September in Mahlerovy sady, Prague 3, or the wine festivals on 6 and 7 September at Prague Castle, as well as on 13 September in Troja. As every year, these events promise plenty of fun and a rich selection of delicious Burčáks. As every year, this festival promises plenty of fun and a wide selection of delicious Burčák.
