The Prague Lions fell to Frankfurt in a thrilling overtime battle, ending their hopes of making the 2025 ELF playoffs. On Sunday, they face the Helvetic Mercenaries in their final game of the season.
The Lions came into the match riding a two-game winning streak, chasing their first-ever playoff spot. Frankfurt, meanwhile, carried strong momentum after recently beating the previously unbeaten Nordic Storm just before the league’s bye week.
At half-time, the Lions led 13-7, largely thanks to their strong running game. However, just before the break, starting running back Adam Zouzelka was injured, dealing a significant blow. In the third quarter, replacement David Macháček also had to leave the field after a hard tackle. Despite these personnel setbacks, the Lions remained in the lead until the final seconds, not least due to a strong defensive performance that repeatedly put pressure on Frankfurt’s offence.
With only eight seconds left on the clock, Galaxy quarterback Jameson Wang found wide receiver Normen Schumm for a touchdown, reducing the score to 21-19. Frankfurt then succeeded with a two-point conversion, sending the game into overtime. In overtime, Frankfurt’s Wang connected with his teammate, American wide receiver Brevin Easton, for the decisive touchdown. On the following drive, defensive back Bijon Harris secured the victory for Frankfurt with a crucial interception.
The Prague Lions face the winless Helvetic Mercenaries this Sunday in their final game of the season. Whether they can cope with the loss of both running backs remains to be seen.
