Prague to Invest in 1,500 New Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles

The initiative is the city’s response to challenges such as climate change, air quality and traffic noise

Prague aims to further accelerate the transition to electromobility: the city is planning to build up to 1,500 public charging stations for electric cars. The multi-million project is intended primarily to help those without their own charging facilities at home – while also contributing to cleaner air and reduced traffic noise.

On Monday, the Prague City Council approved the launch of a major investment project to promote zero-emission mobility. Over the coming years, up to 1,500 publicly accessible slow charging stations for electric vehicles will be installed – spread across various districts and fully owned by the city. The aim is to make the switch to electromobility easier for citizens who do not have the option to charge at home.

“Without a comprehensive public charging network, electromobility remains a privilege for the few. Prague must offer solutions for everyone – and that is exactly what this project delivers,” stressed Zdeněk Hřib, First Deputy Mayor responsible for transport.

The initiative is the city’s response to challenges such as climate change, air quality and traffic noise. The new stations will be designed in particular to enable overnight charging directly on the street – providing extra convenience for users while also helping to cut greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions from transport. The total cost is estimated at just under CZK 493 million and will be financed from the city budget.

“The expansion of charging infrastructure is more than a technical project. It is a tangible step towards a cleaner, healthier city with a high quality of life. Investment in a zero-emission future makes ecological, economic and social sense,” added Hřib.

The project is part of a comprehensive strategy to promote sustainable urban mobility and supports Prague’s aim to move towards a climate-neutral economy. The city wants to position itself as a pioneer in the development of urban electromobility and provide solutions that tangibly improve the everyday lives of its residents.
