Czech Republic Launches Registration for Special Residence for Ukrainian Refugees

Around 15,000 People Meet All Requirements for Long-Term Residence

The Czech Republic has launched registration for a special residence for Ukrainian refugees with temporary protection status. The registration period runs until the end of December 2025.

The Czech Ministry of the Interior has opened registration for a special residence for economically self-sufficient Ukrainian refugees. Around 80,000 people had expressed interest, with approximately 15,000 meeting all requirements and now able to register via the Foreigners’ Information Portal.

Since 8 September 2025, refugees with temporary protection status who have applied for a special residence can view their individual results. The residence is aimed at people who have lived in the Czech Republic for at least two years, hold a valid passport, are economically independent and have a clean criminal record, as well as provide proof of secure housing and continuous health insurance without arrears. In addition, they must not be receiving humanitarian assistance.

The verification of the requirements was carried out using state registers, with family households assessed as a unit.

Of the nearly 47,000 households that expressed interest, 35% did not meet the basic conditions, and a further 45% did not reach the required annual income. Overall, around 20% of households – approximately 15,000 people – meet all the criteria.

Among the successful applicants, 81% are economically active, and around 18% are children. Most live in Prague (22.5%), followed by the Central Bohemia region (15.5%) and Pilsen (14%). The fewest are in the Hradec Králové region (3%).

Registered individuals can now use the Foreigners’ Information Portal to book appointments for in-person visits at the Ministry of the Interior, where further requirements will be checked.

Registration runs until 31 December 2025. If all conditions are met, the special residence will be granted for five years, with free access to the labour market and the option to apply for permanent residence later. Only holders of temporary protection who have expressed interest are eligible. The option of temporary protection remains available to the other war refugees.
