D52 Expansion Kicks Off Towards Austrian Border

The D52 connects the D1 motorway with Pohořelice, Mikulov and Austria

The Czech Roads and Motorways Directorate (ŘSD) has presented to the public the winning option for crossing the Nové Mlýny reservoir as part of the planned D52 motorway section.

The section from Pohořelice to the state border with Austria is currently in the planning phase, with implementation scheduled between 2027 and 2031. The route will be divided into three construction sections, covering a total of 23.1 kilometres.

“This is another significant milestone on the way to the full expansion of the D52. The chosen option of an independent embankment not only meets technical requirements but also minimises negative impacts on the landscape and aquatic ecosystems. Once completed, the connection between Brno and Vienna will be considerably improved, and the accessibility of the entire region enhanced,” stated Transport Minister Martin Kupka.

The D52 links the D1 motorway with Pohořelice, Mikulov and Austria. Its total length is around 45 kilometres; currently, only the section from Brno to Pohořelice is operational. The completion of the remaining sections is planned between 2027 and 2032.

The estimated cost for the Nové Mlýny – state border section is CZK 4.1 billion, and for Pohořelice – Nové Mlýny CZK 2.5 billion.

Once completed, the D52 will be an important part of the European Baltic–Adriatic Corridor and will strengthen transport and economic relations between the Czech Republic and Austria. The aim is to connect the D52 to the planned Austrian A5 motorway, for which an intergovernmental agreement for the connection at the Mikulov–Drasenhofen border crossing was already signed in 2009.
