With more than 90% of the votes counted, Andrej Babiš’s ANO movement holds a clear lead over SPOLU. However, an outright majority remains out of reach – the election winner will have to look for a coalition partner.
Shortly before the end of the count (92%), Babiš’s ANO movement was heading for a clear victory, securing just under 36% of the vote. In second place is the SPOLU alliance, supported by a little over 22% of voters. The left-wing coalition Stačilo! – made up of Communists and Socialists – failed to pass the 5% threshold needed to enter the Czech Chamber of Deputies, winning only about 4.5%.
According to the latest results, the STAN movement is in third place with around 11%, followed by the Pirates with about 8.5% and the SPD with 8%. The group Motoristé sobě, led by MEP Filip Turek, also crossed the 5% barrier, taking nearly 7%.
Despite his clear victory, Andrej Babiš cannot form a government on his own and will need a coalition partner. For now, the only realistic options appear to be Tomio Okamura’s far-right SPD or Motoristé sobě – Babiš has ruled out cooperation with the parties of the current government led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala.
On Sunday, Andrej Babiš is expected to meet President Petr Pavel and will likely be tasked with forming a new government.
