In just a few weeks, the heart of Prague’s Old Town will once again shine in festive splendour. The traditional Christmas tree for the Old Town Square has now been chosen – a mighty spruce from Lesná in North Bohemia will this year become the symbol of Prague’s Christmas.
The traditional Christmas tree, which will adorn the Old Town Square and serve as the central symbol of Prague’s festive season, has been selected. Out of a total of 35 proposals, the choice this year fell on a magnificent Norway spruce from Lesná near Jiřetín pod Jedlovou in the Ústí Region of North Bohemia.
“This year again, the people of Prague and visitors to the capital can look forward to a beautiful tree, which we are bringing from the Ústí Region. I can’t wait to see it light up the Old Town Square and bring the right Christmas atmosphere to the city centre,” said Michal Hroza, Prague City Councillor for Infrastructure, when presenting the chosen tree.
The roughly 85-year-old spruce grew on the property of local resident Rudolf Storczer, whose father once planted it. “The tree is really old, and since the ground in our area is often damp, it was time to fell it for safety reasons. I’m very happy that our tree was selected as the most suitable for the Old Town Square. It’s lovely to know that it will now make the eyes of thousands of visitors to Prague’s Christmas markets light up,” said Storczer.

Experts also confirm that the tree’s root system could already pose a risk to its surroundings. A dendrologist noted during the initial inspection that the spruce would have had to be cut down in the coming years anyway.
“The tree measures 26 metres in height, has a trunk circumference of 223 centimetres, and a base width of over eleven metres,” explained Tomáš Jílek, Chairman of the Board of the municipal company Technologie hlavního města Prahy (THMP), which organises the felling, transport and decoration of the Christmas tree each year.
The felling of the tree is planned for Saturday, 22 November. It will then be transported to the outskirts of the city, where it will remain overnight before being brought to the Old Town Square with minimal traffic disruption. “On Sunday, 23 November, the tree will be erected and decorated with lights and ornaments, so that it will shine in all its glory for the ceremonial lighting on Saturday, 29 November,” said Jílek.
Once again, the people of Prague and visitors to the city can look forward to a festive and unforgettable Christmas atmosphere in the historic city centre.
