New “Prague Street Lexicon” offers a comprehensive encyclopaedia of street names in the Czech capital

Many entries are illustrated with contemporary and historical photographs

Prague has unveiled a new digital reference work on the city’s history. The online database Pražský uličník explains the origin of all street names in the Czech capital – from historic alleys to modern boulevards.

Prague now has a new digital application for anyone interested in the city’s history: Pražský uličník (Prague Street Lexicon). Developed in collaboration with the City Hall, the City Archive, and the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), it is an online encyclopaedia documenting the origin of all Prague street names – from large boulevards and small alleys to squares, parks, and riverside promenades. In addition to information on street names, the project also offers historic maps, photographs, and an overview of former names of public spaces.

The application was officially launched on 15 October 2025 and is available free of charge – both on computers and smartphones. It is aimed at all residents of Prague, as well as professionals and history enthusiasts who wish to explore the city from a new perspective. Although the database is entirely in Czech, the site also works perfectly in English or German using Google Translate (as we have tested).

The online database currently contains 8,318 street names, recorded in the official register for territorial identification, addresses, and real estate (RÚIAN). In addition, the application includes streets that no longer exist or have been renamed – and even those that were officially named but never built.

Searching is extremely straightforward: you can enter the current name, but also historical or German variants – for example, Koněvova or Am Graben (Na příkopě). An alphabetical street list and thematic keyword lists are also available, such as Barrandov or Zahradní Město.

Many entries are illustrated with contemporary and historical photographs. Those wishing to delve deeper into the city’s history can also display historic maps within the application.

Prague now has a modern application that combines the city’s history with contemporary technology – while simultaneously making its rich urban heritage accessible to everyone.
