Prague continues to be one of the most popular destinations for Christmas market fans in 2025: in an international online vote organised by European Best Destinations, the Czech capital achieved 11th place among the 20 best Christmas markets in Europe.
Europe’s Christmas markets are a cherished tradition, attracting millions of visitors each year who wish to experience the festive atmosphere, unique handicrafts, and regional delicacies. Since 2009, a special eight-day online competition has been held annually by European Best Destinations, selecting the top 20 Christmas markets from over 6,494 across Europe.
The top three Christmas markets this year: the winner and thus European Best Christmas Market 2025 is Gdansk in Poland with over 90,000 votes, followed by Craiova in Romania in second place and Geneva in Switzerland in third. Prague takes an excellent 11th place.
Prague Christmas Market at the Old Town Square
The Christmas market at the Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí), located in the heart of the city, has been celebrated for ten consecutive years as one of the top 20 Christmas markets in Europe. As the largest and best-known Christmas market in the Czech Republic, it offers a magical festive experience combining tradition, craftsmanship, and culinary delights.
The market offers more than just shopping and food – it is an immersive festive experience full of history and charm, making it a must-visit during the Christmas season, according to the travel portal.
This year’s traditional Prague Christmas tree is a mighty spruce from Lesná in northern Bohemia. The tree will be erected on 23 November and then decorated so that it can shine in full splendour for the ceremonial lighting on Saturday, 29 November.
However, the Christmas market at the Old Town Square is not the only one in Prague. Popular with locals is the market at Náměstí Míru, which opens as early as 20 November.
