At Prague Zoo, the Světelná Zoo has reopened its gates, transporting visitors into a luminous wilderness of Asia. Over 200 artistic lanterns, interactive projections, and a 60-metre-long light tunnel provide a fascinating experience for both young and old.
On Saturday, the Světelná Zoo (Garden of Lights) opened at the Prague Zoological Garden. The evening exhibition “Divoká Asie” (Wild Asia) presents over two hundred lanterns shaped like the animals and plants of the world’s largest continent. Visitors can look forward to interactive projections, a 60-metre-long light tunnel, and, for the first time, moving animal figures. The light installations bring the zoo to life outside the main season while playfully highlighting selected animal species.
As in the previous year, some lanterns were specially created for Prague. Once again, the focus was on local “flagship species” – including the Przewalski’s horse, closely linked to the zoo’s history since its founding, and the Edwards’s pheasant, an endangered bird species for which Prague Zoo manages the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).

New this year are the moving lanterns, including Sumatran tigers, a snow leopard, an Indian mandrill, and a red panda. The largest figures depict an elephant and an Indian rhinoceros, while especially impressive are a saltwater crocodile and a Bornean orangutan. Overall, the project showcases 42 different animal species.
The Světelná Zoo is open until mid-February. On weekdays, the exhibition is open from 5 pm to 8 pm, and on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 5 pm to 9 pm. The exhibition is closed on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, as well as Mondays and Tuesdays after 6 January.

As in the previous year, there is a separate admission fee for the Světelná Zoo. The exhibition has its own ticket office and entrance near the main entrance of Prague Zoo. Visitors can also benefit from a discounted car park at 50 CZK.
Thousands of lights and life-sized lanterns of animals and plants from the company Garden of Lights have previously illuminated the zoo in Wrocław (Poland) as well as cities in Germany and the USA. Last winter, the first edition of the Světelná Zoo took place in Prague under the title “Divoká Afrika”, attracting nearly 40,000 visitors.
