Prague announces new selection procedure for the director position of Zoo Praha

The previous director, Miroslav Bobek, concluded his tenure at the end of October 2025

Following the departure of Miroslav Bobek at the end of October, the city of Prague is announcing a new selection procedure for the director position of Zoo Praha. Applicants now have one month to apply for the position.

On Monday, the city of Prague decided to launch an open selection procedure for the successor of the director of Zoo Praha. Interested candidates have one month from the publication of the announcement to submit their applications.

“We have devoted special attention to the preparation of the selection procedure and have also coordinated the announcement with the Union of Czech and Slovak Zoos. I am confident that the good reputation of Prague Zoo will attract many interesting candidates,” explained Jana Komrsková, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Climate Planning of the capital.

Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda also emphasised the significance of the decision: “Zoo Praha is one of the most important institutions managed by the city. We want the management to be strong both professionally and organisationally, and to continue developing the zoos in line with their excellent reputation at home and abroad.”

The selection committee will consist of a total of nine members. Three of these will come from the Pirate Party SPOLU and STAN, while the remaining six places are reserved for experts. These include, among others, the economic expert and publicist Miroslav Zámečník, as well as David Nejedlo, director of the Liberec Zoo. The staff of Prague Zoo will be represented by reptile curator Petr Velenský, while the city administration will be represented on the committee by Štěpán Kyjovský, Director of the Environmental Office.

Newly introduced is that the director’s mandate is now limited to six years, with the possibility of re-election, as Jana Komrsková added.

The previous director, Miroslav Bobek, concluded his tenure at the end of October 2025. Since then, Štěpán Kyjovský, Director of the Environmental Office of the city of Prague, has been leading the organisation on an interim basis and is expected to appoint a transitional management team from the existing staff by the end of the year to run the zoo until the conclusion of the selection procedure.
