    Cardinal Dominik Duka dies in Prague aged 82

    Duka led the Prague Archdiocese for more than twelve years

    The Prague Archbishop and Cardinal Dominik Duka has died. He passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 82, the Prague Archdiocese announced. The funeral Mass for the long-serving churchman will take place on 15 November at St. Vitus Cathedral.

    The emeritus Prague Archbishop Cardinal Dominik Duka died aged 82. This was announced by the Prague Archdiocese on Tuesday. The solemn funeral Mass will be held on 15 November at St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle.

    According to the Archdiocese, Duka passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning, around three o’clock. The exact cause of death is not yet known.

    “A personal farewell to the deceased will be possible on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 November, each day from 12:00 to 18:00 at the Church of All Saints (Kostel Všech svatých),” states the Archdiocese’s website. At the same time, the Archdiocese expressed its thanks to the Central Military Hospital in Prague (Ústřední vojenská nemocnice Praha) for the care of the Cardinal.

    Duka had already undergone an operation at the beginning of October

    The emeritus Archbishop had already undergone an operation at the Military Hospital on 6 October. In a Facebook post a few days ago, the 82-year-old wrote that at times he had been very close to death and thanked people for their prayers. On Saturday, he was admitted to the clinic again after having been discharged two days earlier.

    Dominik Duka led the Prague Archdiocese for more than twelve years, before being succeeded in the role by Jan Graubner in 2022.
