During the nationwide autumn collection organised by the Food Banks, people across the Czech Republic have shown remarkable solidarity. In just one day, more than 719 tonnes of donations were gathered – more than ever before.
This year’s Autumn Food Collection (Podzimní Sbírka potravin) set a new record in the Czech Republic: last Saturday, supermarkets and shops across the country collected a total of 719 tonnes of goods – around 15 percent more than last year. Donors contributed 645 tonnes of food and 74 tonnes of hygiene products.
More than 2,800 brick-and-mortar shops across the country took part in the campaign. Over 5,000 volunteers in green aprons collected donations directly in stores. “We sincerely thank all donors for their generosity and compassion,” said the organisers. “Your contributions help directly in the region where they were made – for example, single parents, older people, families in crisis, the homeless, or people with disabilities.”

The food drive is considered the largest charitable initiative in the country. The collected products are distributed to regional food banks, which in turn hand them over through charitable organisations directly to those in need. Anyone who was unable to make it to a shop on Saturday can still donate products for people in need online via participating retailers until 18 November.
Since 2019, the collection has taken place twice a year. It is organised by the Czech Federation of Food Banks, the Confederation of Commerce and Tourism of the Czech Republic, and numerous partners from the business and non-profit sectors.
The event is held under the patronage of President Petr Pavel, Minister of Agriculture Marek Výborný, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Marian Jurečka, and the European Federation of Food Banks.
