Currently, around 1.1 million foreigners are living legally in the Czech Republic

In terms of citizenship, Ukraine is clearly at the top

The number of foreigners living in the Czech Republic increased again in the third quarter of 2025. In particular, the ongoing immigration from Ukraine is having a clear impact on the statistics. New data show where most foreigners live – and how their composition is changing.

As of 30 September 2025, a total of 1,107,403 foreigners were registered in the Czech Republic. Of these, 327,214 people were staying in the country with a permit for temporary residence, 390,880 had a permit for permanent residence, and 389,309 were registered under the temporary protection programme. This is according to the latest data from the Czech Ministry of the Interior.

The significant increase in foreign nationals is mainly related to the granting of temporary protection status to refugees from Ukraine. Among foreigners living legally in the Czech Republic, citizens of so-called third countries predominate: 871,821 people, or 79 per cent. Citizens from the EU, the EEA, and Switzerland account for 235,582 people, representing 21 per cent.

Per 1,000 inhabitants, there are approximately 101.8 foreign nationals in the country – making up 10.18 per cent of the total population. Compared with the previous quarter, the number of foreigners has risen by 1.47 per cent, or 15,994 people.

In terms of citizenship, Ukraine has traditionally been clearly at the top. Ukrainian nationals accounted for more than half of all foreigners registered in the Czech Republic at the end of September 2025. The proportion of women among those with a valid residence permit stood at 48 per cent on the reporting date.

The highest concentration of foreigners continues to be in the capital, Prague, where their share was 32.5 per cent at the end of September. This is followed by the Central Bohemian Region, with a share of 14.5 per cent. The lowest proportion of foreigners is in the Zlín District, where they make up just 2.4 per cent of the population.
