Prague Plans Revitalisation of the Vltava Riverbanks in Stromovka Park

The initiative is part of a long-term concept for the development of Prague’s riverbank zones as well as the area around the Císařská louka

A new study shows how the Vltava riverbank at Stromovka Park is to become more attractive, accessible, and relaxing. Prague is now planning the next step, bringing the proposed redevelopment a step closer.

The planned revitalisation of Prague’s riverbanks moves a step closer. The City Council has discussed a study aimed at improving access to the Vltava while simultaneously enhancing the landscape around the river. Specifically, it concerns the Vltava riverbank of Stromovka Park along the shipping canal – from Troja Bridge to the small stream near the tennis courts in the park.

“The Troja Basin is one of the capital’s most important recreational areas, but at the same time a central location for technical infrastructure,” explained Petr Hlaváček, Deputy Mayor for Spatial and Urban Development. Measures for flood protection, a new energy centre for the heating supply of the Bubny district, and the recreational function of the area must all be coordinated here. “All of this must succeed without compromising the quality of this valuable local recreational space,” Hlaváček added.

From the perspective of Councillor Adam Zábranský, the project is also an important boost for the park: “The revitalisation is intended to make this part of Stromovka more attractive and thereby relieve the more frequently visited areas.”

The study was already produced in 2018

The initiative is part of a long-term concept for the development of Prague’s riverbank zones and the area around Císařský ostrov (island). Several public consultations have already taken place, where residents and visitors could contribute their ideas for future development.

“The entire space is to be transformed – from a technical traffic axis into a broad river promenade. Traffic will be slowed, and significantly more space will be created for pedestrians and cyclists,” explains Ondřej Boháč, Director of the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR Praha). New access points to the water and recreational areas directly on the riverbank are planned.

For the subsequent section towards Podbaba, the IPR has also prepared a conceptual study. Instead of a narrow path, a four-metre-wide cycle route is planned – complemented by a two-metre gravel strip, additional seating and recreational areas, play areas, new water access points, and a jetty for a potential new water line.

Changes also planned for Císařská louka (Island)

The entire surroundings of the island are being redesigned: a modern landing stage is to be created, new comfortable steps leading up to Stromovka Park, and public toilets as well as a small catering area are planned.
