Prague launches winter support for homeless people

As in previous years, the Prague Centre for Social Services will coordinate the measures in addition to its regular activities

Prague is once again launching its winter support programme for homeless people. Until the end of March 2026, 700 sleeping places, around 100 “warm chair” spaces, and 70 crisis beds will be available to provide assistance during the cold months.

From today, 1 December, the Czech capital begins this year’s winter support for homeless people, running until 31 March 2026. The aim is to help those without permanent accommodation during the colder months. In total, 700 sleeping places and approximately 100 “warm chair” spaces are available. For emergencies, an additional 70 crisis beds are also on standby to temporarily expand the regular capacity if needed.

“Every year, we try to improve our winter support programme. Two years ago, we introduced guaranteed provision in hospitals; last year, we increased the capacity in emergency shelters and mobile services. This year, we are further strengthening these offers. In addition, we are expanding the ‘warm chair’ spaces and keeping 70 crisis beds in reserve,” explains Alexandra Udženija, Deputy Mayor for Social Affairs of the City of Prague.

All measures are coordinated by the Prague Centre for Social Services (Centrum sociálních služeb Praha). The service provides accommodation, offers support services, and links the organisations involved via a 24/7 dispatch service. This service monitors facility capacities and ensures rapid information sharing. Part of the system is also an intervention team, which aims to improve cooperation with hospitals regarding the discharge management of homeless patients.

The city urges the public to pay particular attention to homeless people in life-threatening situations. In such cases, the Prague Emergency Centre or the City Police should be contacted on 156. Officers will assist in finding available spaces and establishing contact with mobile support services.
