New Rules Limit Firework Use and Sale Across the Czech Republic

The Czech government has introduced an amendment to the pyrotechnics law, aiming to protect people, animals, and the environment

New restrictions on fireworks have come into force in the Czech Republic, aimed at increasing safety and reducing harm to people, animals, and the environment. The amendment, valid since 1 December, introduces strict limits on where fireworks may be used and how they may be sold.

New Year’s Eve celebrations have long been accompanied by fireworks, and people have developed a habit of purchasing them for special occasions. However, what starts as fun can quickly turn into a life-threatening hazard, prompting authorities to implement necessary changes and tighten regulations nationwide to protect both humans and animals.

The Pyrotechnics Act, as amended by Act No. 344/2025 Coll., strictly prohibits the use of any type of fireworks within 250 metres of sensitive areas — such as hospitals, nursing homes, hostels, animal shelters, animal enclosures, zoos, and similar facilities.

While fireworks were once widely popular in the Czech Republic, public opinion has shifted. Nowadays, fewer and fewer Czechs support their use, and many now condemn pyrotechnics for their negative impact.

    The Downsides of Fireworks

Fireworks have a significant impact on air quality, as they release toxic substances and fine particles into the atmosphere when set off. An increased risk of fires and unwanted waste from fireworks in the environment adds to the seriousness of the problem. In national parks, fireworks are strictly prohibited.

The tightening of the rules results from the health risks caused by improper use, increased noise, and the disorientation experienced by animals. As Lukáš Vlček, Minister of Industry and Trade, stated for the Ministry of the Environment:

“Unprofessional use of pyrotechnics causes serious injuries and property damage every year. To protect people and animals, we have tightened rules for selling and purchasing pyrotechnics. This includes restricting sales at markets, banning use near sensitive areas, and requiring age verification for online purchases.”

Authorities stress that these new rules are designed not to limit celebration, but to ensure that festivities remain safe for everyone — humans and animals alike. By following the regulations, the public can continue to enjoy special occasions while minimizing risk and protecting the environment.
