Sparta Prague are through to the semi-finals of the Spengler Cup in Davos after yesterday’s impressive 5–1 victory over Canada. Today, the Prague side face the U.S. Collegiate Selects in their bid to reach the final.
HC Sparta Praha are through to the semi-finals of the prestigious Spengler Cup. In the quarter-final in Davos, the team coached by Jaroslav Nedvěd defeated Canada. After two periods the score was still 0–0, but in the end the Czechs swept the Canadians aside with a 5–1 win.
“It was hard work, but we managed it,” captain Filip Chlapík said after the game. “Thanks to a great performance by Jakub Kovář (Goalkeeper), we held out for a long time and did not let Canada’s equaliser unsettle us. This victory is also extremely important for us psychologically, but we have to stay grounded – after all, the next game is on Tuesday.”
Goals: 47th minute Dzierkals (Irving, K. Hrabik) 1–0. 54th Peca (Seney, Brouillard) 1–1. 55th Chlapík (Vesalainen) 2–1. 59th Dzierkals (Raška) 3–1 (empty net). 60th Vesalainen 4–1 (empty net). 60th Němeček (Sirota) 5–1.

U.S. Collegiate Selects – a strong line-up with international experience
The U.S. Collegiate Selects squad adds an unusual flavour to the traditional tournament. In Davos, the best available selection from NCAA universities is competing. While the top talents are currently involved in the Under-20 World Championship, this is by no means a team of low-quality youngsters. Several players have NHL potential, have taken part in junior world championships, and some have even appeared at senior world championships.
