Jižní Město in Prague: The Largest Panel Housing Estate in the Czech Republic Celebrates its 50th Anniversary This Year
On the occasion of this year’s celebrations, the new anniversary logo “50 let Jižního Města” has now been unveiled
Jižní Město, the largest panel housing estate in the Czech Republic, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. To mark the milestone, the public was invited to vote on the official anniversary logo for the Prague district.
Jižní Město, or Jižák as it is known by the people of Prague, with around 80,000 to 90,000 inhabitants, is the most populous administrative district of Prague and celebrates a round anniversary this year. Construction began in the 1960s, and the first residents moved in during the mid-1970s – around 1976.
Jižní Město is located in the south-east of Prague, is divided into two parts (Jižní Město I and II) by the D1 motorway, and is well connected to the city centre via Metro Line C.

Anniversary Logo: 50 Years of Jižní Město | 1976–2026
For the 50th anniversary of Jižní Město | 1976–2026 (50 let Jižního Města), residents of the district were able to vote on the anniversary logo. In the final round, works by Peter Bobek, Josef Karhan, and Jan Kocek were shortlisted.

The result was extremely close: only a few votes separated the first and second place designs. The winner was ultimately Jan Kocek, who has himself lived in Jižní Město for many years. His design impressed the public above all with its clear symbolism and a reduced, easily understandable style.
The winning logo will be used as the central visual element in the anniversary year 2026 – on posters, the district’s website, at Dny Prahy 11, at municipal events, and on souvenirs.

50 Years of Jižní Město
Jižní Město was developed in the second half of the 20th century as a large-scale residential estate on the cadastral areas of the formerly independent municipalities of Chodov and Háje, which were incorporated into Prague in 1968. Construction began in the 1960s, and the first residents moved in during the mid-1970s – around 1976. The project was part of a large-scale urban plan to expand housing and was divided into Jižní Město I and II. With the opening of Metro Line C in 1980, the district gained an efficient transport connection. Today, Jižní Město is the largest residential area of its kind in the Czech Republic and makes up the majority of Prague 11 (Městská část praha 11).
