Following the confirmed detection of bird flu, Zoo Praha has implemented comprehensive protective measures. Several birds had previously died, and laboratory examinations confirmed the infection in four animals. According to the city authorities, there is no danger to visitors.

The Prague Zoo responded on Thursday after a suspected infection had arisen. Initial results from post-mortem examinations and laboratory analyses ultimately confirmed the disease in four animals. In coordination with the Municipal Veterinary Administration in Prague, extraordinary veterinary measures were subsequently ordered.

“I would like to reassure the public: There is absolutely no health risk to visitors to our zoo. Our actions are being taken in close coordination with the Veterinary Administration. We will provide regular updates on further developments,” said Deputy Mayor of Prague for the Environment and Climate Planning, Jana Komrsková.

As part of the measures, birds from open outdoor enclosures have been temporarily moved to secured indoor areas. Restrictions for visitors primarily affect walk-through enclosures. In addition, the Rákos Pavilion and the Sečuán Pavilion will remain closed for the necessary period. The Penguin Pavilion will remain accessible due to its glass barrier. The remaining eleven indoor pavilions – including the Reservace Dja, the Africa House and the Indonesian Jungle – remain open as usual. According to the zoo, there is no risk of infection for visitors.

Infections with avian influenza (bird flu) have occurred more frequently in Central Europe in recent years. However, the zoo remains confident that the current situation can be kept under control. Several of the measures introduced go beyond the required regulations and are intended to completely eliminate the risk of further spread.
