With the end of the winter break, Prague is resuming the seasonal collection of plant-based organic waste. From March onwards, the brown bins will gradually be placed in individual city districts.

Following the winter break, the city is restarting the seasonal collection of plant-based organic waste. From 1 March until 15 December 2026, the brown bins will be emptied regularly in the individual districts – depending on the respective local collection days. Residents can conveniently order a bio bin from home via an electronic form.

However, the rollout will not begin simultaneously across the entire metropolis, but will take place gradually in accordance with the respective route schedules. As adjustments and route optimisations may have led to changes, the city administration recommends checking the individual collection day. This may have shifted compared to the previous year – as may the date of the first collection. Current timetables and further information are available on the city’s environmental portal.

Households can choose between bio bins with a capacity of 120 or 240 litres. Collection can take place weekly or fortnightly. Changes to the bin size or collection frequency are also possible online – up to twice a year.

The seasonal organic waste collection has attracted considerable interest in the capital for years. At present, nearly 47,000 bins are in regular use. This underlines the growing willingness of households to separate biodegradable waste.

Last year, Prague residents separated almost 20,000 tonnes of plant-based organic waste. This was processed at composting facilities and further utilised as certified organic fertiliser. The measure therefore not only helps to reduce the volume of residual waste, but also strengthens the principles of the circular economy in the city.

The City of Prague provides the service to its residents free of charge. It forms part of the long-term strategy in the area of waste management and environmental protection and also supports compliance with legal requirements for the separate collection of recyclable components of household waste.
