Prague Zoo will place polar bears at the centre of attention this weekend. With a special programme for International Polar Bear Day, the zoo aims to raise awareness of the protection of these threatened animals.
Prague Zoo will mark International Polar Bear Day on Saturday, 28 February, with a varied programme. Visitors can look forward to commented feedings, information activities and special insights into the care of the animals.
International Polar Bear Day is observed worldwide on 27 February. Prague Zoo traditionally moves the event to one of the final weekends of February. The aim is to highlight the effects of climate change: melting ice floes are increasingly destroying the natural habitat of polar bears. According to estimates, around 26,000 animals currently live in the Arctic, threatened by the loss of sea ice, food shortages and economic activities in the region.

The programme will focus on the two polar bear twins Gregor and Aleut, who will be presented during several commented sessions. These will take place at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 and 14:00 at the polar bear enclosure.
Another programme highlight is the handover of a so-called enrichment element at 13:00. These are specially developed activities designed to encourage the animals’ natural behaviour and contribute to their well-being. Visitors will gain insight into the daily work of the animal keepers.
Between 10:00 and 15:00, an educational interactive programme on the topic of the Arctic will complement the schedule. At interactive stations, visitors can learn about polar bears and other animals of the polar region, as well as find out more about the planned new exhibition project “Arktida”.
