The annual orchid exhibition at the Botanical Garden Prague brings colour and life back after the winter months – and at the same time offers fascinating insights into the world of these remarkable plants. This year, it follows in the footsteps of early explorers and growers, taking visitors back to the time of the first greenhouses and orchid collections.
With the arrival of spring and the associated brighter days, the Fata Morgana greenhouse is once again hosting its popular orchid exhibition. This colourful event not only showcases the splendour of these vibrant flowers, but also provides interesting insights into these fascinating plants.
From today, 27 February, visitors can once again experience and explore the fascinating world of orchids in the Fata Morgana greenhouse at the Botanical Garden in Troja. The exhibition runs until 15 March.
Orchids and their stories
This year, the focus is on the stories behind the orchids: how they were once discovered on expeditions, transported across oceans, and eventually became part of European collections. The exhibition recalls a time when exotic plants were considered prized treasures and found their way into botanical gardens and private collections.
Visitors will learn who brought orchids to Europe, how they were cultivated in the past, and why they were among the most sought-after plants of their time.

In the Fata Morgana greenhouse, guests can expect themed arrangements featuring orchids and other tropical plants – ranging from delicate details to striking individual specimens. The exhibition is organised in cooperation with the Mělník Horticultural Academy under the leadership of Klára Franc Vavříková. The curator is Romana Rybková, who is responsible for tropical plants at the Botanical Garden Prague.
The programme is complemented by a traditional sale of orchids and houseplants in the exhibition hall of the Ornamental Gardens (Tuesday to Sunday, 9.00–19.00). Visitors can choose from a wide selection of plants there.
