With Lenka Poliaková, a woman is at the head of Prague Zoo for the first time. The experienced manager aims to build on the zoo’s previous development while also setting new priorities.

Lenka Poliaková is the new director of Prague Zoo. The former employee took up her post on 1 March, and her term of office is set at six years.

Poliaková previously worked at the zoo between 2011 and 2013, where she was responsible for projects focused on the protection of animals in the wild. She subsequently worked, among other roles, at the Ministry of Health, where she headed a department and served as an adviser to the minister.

“I accept the appointment with great pleasure and at the same time with respect. Thanks to the excellent work of its staff and my predecessors, Prague Zoo ranks among the world’s best. My aim is to build on this,” Poliaková said in an interview with the news channel ČT24 at the end of January. She intends to contribute her experience from business and public administration and to further develop the institution in a stable manner, both economically and in terms of personnel.

A particular focus will be placed on internal communication. “One of my key priorities will be open dialogue with staff and the development of a shared vision. A united and motivated team is the foundation of any successful institution,” Poliaková added.

The new appointment became necessary after long-serving director Miroslav Bobek stepped down in September last year. Several employees had accused him of bullying and inappropriate management conduct, which Bobek denied. He had led the zoo since early 2010.
