New carriages for the Petřín funicular are expected to arrive in Prague in the coming weeks. Test runs are planned from May, with the reopening scheduled for late summer.

The modernisation of the Petřín funicular in Prague is making progress: the new carriages are set to arrive in the Czech capital within the next few weeks. Once construction work is completed, they could begin carrying passengers for the first time towards the end of the summer.

Originally, operations were due to be suspended in March 2025. However, due to heavy rainfall that severely damaged the line and made short-term repairs no longer worthwhile, services were already halted at the end of September 2024.

The two new carriages are currently being manufactured in Switzerland. According to Prague Public Transport Company, production is in its final phase. Cable systems are currently being installed, among other things, and work on the interior is being completed. Delivery to Prague is expected between the end of March and the beginning of April. Initial components of the future control and drive system have already arrived in Prague.

The new funicular on Prague’s Petřín Hill, designed by Anna Marešová, has already received the prestigious German Design Award 2025 ahead of its launch. The innovative design combines modern technology with sustainable approaches and a playful interaction of the carriages.

The design of the new funicular combines elegant, simple lines with functionality. Thanks to large panoramic windows, the cabins offer passengers a special experience. They feature four compartments with separate entrances and a capacity of up to 120 standing passengers. The seats can be easily adjusted so that they can serve as armrests during the short, three-minute journey for those who prefer to stand. Step-free access allows wheelchair users and parents with prams to board comfortably.

Test runs planned from May

Technical acceptance of the new carriages is scheduled for March, followed by their transport to the Czech capital. The transport company plans to begin initial test runs – initially without passengers – in May.

The reopening of the Petřín funicular is planned for late summer. In addition to the new carriages, the infrastructure will also be completely renewed, including a newly constructed track system.
