After nearly a year of construction work, one of the Czech Republic’s best-known puppet theatres is reopening its doors. The Divadlo Spejbla a Hurvínka is thus returning to its modernised home stage in Dejvice.
After a renovation lasting almost a year, the historic Divadlo Spejbla a Hurvínka has returned to its traditional address at Dejvická 38. With the reopening, the legendary characters of Czech puppet theatre are also returning to their home stage.
In total, the Prague 6 district invested around 16.5 million crowns in the modernisation of the building. The capital city of Prague additionally financed the complete replacement of the seating in the auditorium.

One of the most visible additions is a newly created rehearsal stage, which also serves as a studio stage. Smaller productions and so-called “mini performances”, as well as other intimate theatre projects, are to take place there in the future. The ticket office area has also been redesigned and now presents itself as a modern customer centre.

In addition to several smaller structural adjustments, the heating and water pipes were completely replaced as part of the works. The audience toilets were also modernised. Additional comfort is provided by the redesigned main hall, which has been freshly painted and equipped with a total of 281 new seats.
The foyer has also received a new appearance: a new floor surface, fresh wall colours and large-format prints featuring the well-known characters of the puppet family now welcome visitors as soon as they enter the theatre.

At the centre of the performances have always been the two cult figures Spejbl and Hurvínek. The father, first seen on stage in 1920, and his son Hurvínek, who joined him in 1926, embody two generations and their different views of the world. In their stories – sometimes everyday, sometimes fantastical – they comment with humour and irony on fundamental questions of life.
