After a fire disaster in a nightclub in Switzerland, firefighters in the Czech Republic have launched increased inspections of bars, clubs and discotheques. Initial inspections reveal numerous safety deficiencies at the venues.

Following a tragic fire at a nightclub in the Swiss Alpine resort of Crans-Montana, firefighters in the Czech Republic have started increased inspections of bars, clubs and discotheques. In the tragedy, 41 people lost their lives and a further 119 were injured. Initial results reveal numerous safety deficiencies – in some cases fines have already been imposed.

The inspections focus primarily on fire safety measures in nightlife venues. According to the fire brigade, many establishments lack properly marked escape routes or functioning fire extinguishers. Some operators had also failed to carry out mandatory fire safety inspections for extended periods.

According to a report by the news portal iDnes.cz, fire inspectors had carried out 221 of a planned 777 inspections by 1 March 2026. In doing so, they had already identified 292 violations.

“On site we have so far imposed fines amounting to several tens of thousands of crowns. However, this is only the beginning. Further sanctions will be decided within administrative proceedings, and the inspection campaign is far from finished,” said Klára Ochmannová, spokeswoman for the Fire Rescue Service, speaking to the news portal.

Among the most serious violations are unauthorised structural alterations and failure to comply with regulations governing the use of premises. In such cases, guests may still be present at the venues, but from a fire safety perspective the premises are not sufficiently safe.

Similar inspections had already been carried out after a fire at a restaurant in Most in January last year. Seven people died after a guest accidentally knocked over a gas heater. In response, emergency services inspected numerous pubs, bars, wine bars and restaurants – including their outdoor areas.
