The Czech railway administration is planning a comprehensive renovation of the ceiling of the concourse hall at Prague Main Railway Station. The aim of the work is to solve a problem that has existed for years: water is penetrating the building structure from the road and the surrounding areas above.

The state infrastructure administration Správa železnic has now launched a tender for the first phase of construction. Work is scheduled to begin in the first half of this year. In addition to renewing the waterproof insulation of the ceiling, adjustments to the magistral road on Wilsonova Street are also planned, which runs directly above the concourse hall.

Construction work is expected to continue until 2028. The renovation is being carried out because of recurring problems with water penetrating from the parking area and the road above. The concourse hall dates back to the 1970s, and its structure is now set to undergo extensive repairs.

As part of the construction work, the reinforced concrete slab above the hall will also be renovated. This is based on an expert report from specialists at the Klokner Institute. In addition, the adjacent roads and pavements will be renewed. Access to the historic Fantova Building will in future be provided via a new pedestrian crossing over the magistral road from the car park.

The surroundings of the station will also be upgraded. Plans include relocating the public lighting and planting new trees in front of the Fantova Building. In addition, access to the main railway station from the National Museum is to be improved.

The estimated contract value for the construction work is around 300 million crowns. The project will be partly financed through a loan from the European Investment Bank under the “Czech Rail TEN-T and Regional” programme. The national share of the funding will be provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
