Thousands of volunteers will set out across the Czech Republic for a major spring clean-up at the end of March. As part of the campaign “Ukliďme Česko”, cities, municipalities and above all natural areas are once again to be cleared of litter.
This year marks the 13th nationwide edition of the large spring clean-up campaign “Ukliďme Česko”. The initiative is considered the largest volunteer clean-up campaign in the Czech Republic. More than 200,000 volunteers took part last year. The main clean-up day this year is Saturday, 28 March. The aim of the campaign is to remove waste from municipalities, cities and especially from nature.
“On the one hand, it is unfortunate that the rubbish of irresponsible fellow citizens repeatedly has to be removed. Experience shows, however, that in places where many people gather – such as tourists – smaller amounts of litter accumulate again over the course of the year,” explains Radek Janoušek from the association Ukliďme Česko. At the same time, he said it was encouraging that the average amount of collected waste has declined in recent years and that many illegal dumping sites, some of which had existed for years, have already been removed.

New this year is also a collection campaign for old mobile phones. Volunteers are encouraged to bring old phones from their drawers to the meeting points of the clean-up events or to send them in free of charge via the shipping service Zásilkovna. The aim is to set a Czech record in the collection and recycling of mobile phones. At the same time, valuable raw materials are to be recovered. Participants will also have the opportunity to take part in a prize draw in which new smartphones with a total value of 100,000 crowns will be raffled. Further information can be found on the website ReRekord.cz.
In recent years, the association Ukliďme Česko has increasingly focused its activities on awareness and education. Young people in particular are to be made more aware of issues such as waste prevention, environmental pollution and recycling. “Our goal is not to permanently clean up other people’s rubbish. Even so, after more than ten years we are still surprised by what people dispose of in nature,” says project initiator Miroslav Kubásek. For this reason, the app KAMsNIM.cz was also developed, which shows users where different types of waste can be disposed of correctly.
Further information can be found on the organisers’ website. If for any reason you cannot take part, there is also the option to support the campaign “Ukliďme Česko” financially.
