With the arrival of spring, the annual cleaning of streets and pavements in Prague is also getting under way. From the beginning of April, cleaning teams will head out to remove grit, dust and other residues left behind by the winter.

With the start of spring, Prague once again faces its annual large-scale street cleaning. The aim of the operation is to clear the city’s streets and pavements of remains of winter gritting material as well as dirt and dust. The so-called block cleaning of streets will begin on 1 April 2026, according to the Prague Technical Road Administration (TSK).

As part of the block cleaning, pavements and carriageways in the affected streets will be thoroughly cleaned. The TSK places particular emphasis on a complete cleaning of the entire street space — including the green strips along the traffic areas. The main goal is to remove residues of gritting material, dust and other dirt that have accumulated during the winter months.

Thorough cleaning of the streets after winter is considered an important contribution to reducing dust pollution and improving environmental quality in the city. Block cleaning is part of the regular maintenance of Prague’s road network and takes place twice a year. The second round traditionally begins towards the end of the summer holidays and continues until November.

Information on dates and affected streets

Detailed information about the dates and affected areas is provided by the TSK on its website. There, residents can use a new map application to see when pavements and carriageways in their street will be cleaned.

Temporary traffic restrictions

As in previous years, drivers should expect temporary traffic restrictions during the cleaning. One week before the cleaning takes place, residents will be informed by mobile traffic signs marked “No stopping”. An additional sign will state the reason for the restriction as well as the exact time period of the cleaning — set between 8:00 and 15:00. In some areas, mobile signs reading “Traffic restriction zone” and “End of traffic restriction zone” will also be used to replace a large number of individual prohibition signs.
