Prague 1 is once again relying on misting systems in summer to counter the increasing heat in the city centre. Mobile units are intended to provide cooling at busy locations and improve the quality of stay.
Prague’s city centre is responding to rising temperatures in summer: the district administration of Prague 1 is planning again this year to install mobile misting systems in order to reduce heat stress in heavily frequented areas of the city centre.
The district council has approved the installation of a total of eight units. These are to be installed, among other places, at Újezd, at Ovocný trh, on Old Town Square, at Jungmannovo náměstí and at Náměstí Republiky. Operation is planned seasonally from May until the end of September 2026.
The units will be connected directly to existing underground hydrants without any structural modifications. Installation, maintenance and water supply are the responsibility of Prague Waterworks.
In doing so, Prague 1 is building on experience from the years 2020 to 2025, during which similar systems were already in use. According to the city, the measures have proven effective: they reduced ambient temperatures and at the same time lowered dust levels. The misting systems were also well received by residents and visitors.
“On hot days, we need fast and functional solutions in public space. Misting systems are a simple but effective way to make staying in the city more pleasant,” said Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Kateřina Klasnová.
Locations of the misting systems:
Újezd
2x at Náměstí Republiky
Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí)
Jungmann Square (Jungmannovo náměstí)
Coal Market (Uhelný trh)
Fruit Market (Ovocný trh)
Havířská Street
The misting systems are part of a broader strategy with which the district is responding to increasing heat and aims to improve the stay in the historic centre. Further water and cooling elements are already planned as part of park and playground renovations. For example, another misting system has been installed at the playground Za Haštalem, a drinking fountain has been created in Vlašská Street, and corresponding elements are also planned for the redesign of Kampa Park and Holubička Park.
