Prague is moving ahead with the urgently needed renovation of the Vinohrady Theatre. The city council has now awarded the contract for the comprehensive modernisation of the historic building. The aim is to technically upgrade the traditional venue and prepare it for the future.

The City of Prague has taken an important step towards modernising one of its most traditional theatre venues. On Monday, the city council decided on the awarding of the contract for the comprehensive reconstruction of the Vinohrady Theatre (Divadlo na Vinohradech). The most economically advantageous offer amounts to approximately CZK 1.66 billion (excluding VAT).

As part of the project, the historic building will undergo a fundamental renovation and be brought up to the latest technical standards. Plans include the modernisation of stage technology as well as the expansion of underground spaces behind the theatre. A new rehearsal hall will be built there, which will also serve as a small stage with a capacity of 150 to 200 visitors. Storage areas within the building will also be structurally adapted.

According to Prague’s Councillor for Culture, Tomáš Slabihoudek, the renovation exemplifies the city’s approach to its cultural heritage. It is not only about restoring a historic building, but about creating a modern cultural infrastructure that will serve future generations.

Prague’s Mayor, Bohuslav Svoboda, also described the decision as a significant milestone. The theatre building, dating from 1907, is now in a critical condition and cannot continue operating without fundamental renovation. In addition to technical upgrades, the planned works will also bring a new studio stage and greater comfort for both audiences and the ensemble.

The Vinohrady Theatre is one of the most important stages in the Czech capital, but it has never undergone a comprehensive modernisation since its construction. Its technical equipment is now significantly outdated, and in some cases no longer usable.

The planned renovation therefore includes the installation of modern stage technology, the creation of a fully equipped studio stage, the renewal of infrastructure, and adjustments to the surrounding areas of the building. The aim is to raise operations to a contemporary European standard while significantly improving efficiency.
