A long-standing tradition is being continued this year: a special shipment is once again setting off from Plzeň to the Vatican. More than 2,000 bottles of Pilsner lager have been ceremonially blessed for the occasion.

The Czech brewery Plzeňský Prazdroj has once again sent its traditional Easter gift to the Pope. A total of 2,026 bottles of Pilsner lager were blessed on Tuesday directly at the brewery by the Bishop of Plzeň, Tomáš Holub, before beginning their journey of around 1,300 kilometres to the Vatican.

According to emeritus brewmaster Václav Berka, the connection between the Vatican and Pilsner beer dates back to the 19th century. Even then, the Holy See was among the customers of the lager brewed under the Pilsner Urquell brand. The present tradition was revived in 2011 and has continued annually ever since.

Historically, the relationship dates back to Pope Leo XIII, who had the beer delivered on the recommendation of his doctors. The first references to such deliveries can be found in specialist publications from 1890 as well as in contemporary regional newspapers.

This year, the delivery will once again be handed over in person at the Vatican. Among those travelling to the general audience at the end of April to present the gift to the Pope are brewmaster Václav Berka, brewery director Václav Šimek and company spokesman Zdeněk Kovář. The current Pontiff, Leo XIV, is considered a fan of Czech beer.

The symbolic number of 2,026 bottles corresponds to the current year. As in previous years, the shipment was ceremonially sealed in the brewery courtyard before setting off.

The beer delivery is traditionally accompanied by a handcrafted gift from the Czech Republic. This year, the Pope will receive two handmade beer mugs made of Bohemian glass by the company Rückl, decorated with engravings of the anniversary brewery. “Beer is best enjoyed together,” Berka said.

In previous years, the gifts have included a wooden barrel, a cross made from oak wood of old beer barrels, designer bottles, watches and a specially cast bell. All items are also produced for the brewery museum in Plzeň.

To mark the 15th anniversary of the tradition, the brewery museum is planning a special exhibition, which will open for the first time during Muzejní noc on 22 May and will be on display until 22 June 2026.
