Due to extensive construction and modernisation works, the main runway 06/24 at Prague Airport will be closed. For around four and a half months, air traffic will be diverted to the secondary runway 12/30, whose arrival and departure routes pass over densely populated areas in Prague, Central Bohemia and parts of Kladno.
At Václav Havel Airport Prague, a longer closure of the main runway is imminent. From today, Monday, 30 March 2026, runway 06/24 will be taken out of operation for around four and a half months. All air traffic will be handled via the secondary runway for much of the summer season.
The reason is extensive construction and modernisation works, which are necessary to bring the infrastructure up to current legal standards and to ensure the long-term operational safety and reliability of the airport. During the works, all flight operations will be handled via the secondary runway 12/30. This routes arrivals and departures over densely populated areas in Prague and the Central Bohemian Region, as well as parts of Kladno.

According to airport management, this solution is currently unavoidable, as a planned parallel runway is not yet in operation. The construction works are being carried out in cooperation with several partners, including energy suppliers, transport authorities and the Czech Air Navigation Services.
Key projects include the reconstruction and expansion of taxiway intersections, the construction of new cable routes and the modernisation of safety-critical systems. These include, among other things, the renewal of airport fencing and the replacement of LED guidance lights for safe take-offs and landings. These measures are complemented by routine maintenance work, such as on paved surfaces, substructures and markings.
The works are scheduled to be completed later this year. According to current plans, no comparable closure is expected in 2027. At the same time, the airport is continuing planning for the parallel runway. Once it is put into operation, the current secondary runway can be closed and future works can be scheduled in a way that avoids affecting densely populated areas.
