Sparta Prague have fought their way into the Extraliga play-off semi-finals after an impressive comeback. In the decisive seventh game, the team edged past Plzeň 1:0 – and now face another top opponent in Pardubice.

HC Sparta Prague are in the Extraliga play-off semi-finals: the capital side won the decisive seventh game against HC Škoda Plzeň 1:0. The only goal of the match was scored by Filip Chlapík in the 21st minute on the power play. Sparta will now face HC Dynamo Pardubice in the semi-finals.

The Prague side thus completed a remarkable comeback: after trailing 1:3 in the series, they succeeded for the first time in a decisive seventh play-off game, having lost their previous seven attempts.

A defensively oriented game was expected from the outset. The Prague side relied on quick transitions and patiently waited for their chance – which came shortly before the end of the first period. Following penalties against Teplý and Schleiss, Sparta had 91 seconds of a two-man advantage and made full use of it. After a combination with Špaček, Chlapík scored to make it 1:0.

Plzeň had power-play opportunities in the second period but remained unsuccessful. In the final period, Plzeň had more of the play but found few ways past Sparta’s compact defence. Even with the man advantage, they failed to score.

This marks a surprise result for the seventh-seeded Prague side: Sparta eliminate the second-placed team from the regular season and advance to the semi-finals.
