The modernisation of one of the most important rail connections in the greater Prague area is taking concrete shape. Construction contracts for the line between Prague-Ruzyně and Kladno have now been signed – and the project is significantly cheaper than initially calculated.
The Czech Railway Administration (Správa železnic) has signed contracts with construction companies for the modernisation of the railway line between Prague-Ruzyně and Kladno. The project is considered the most significant investment of this year’s construction season in the Czech rail network – and is coming in cheaper than originally expected.
Transport Minister Ivan Bednárik emphasised the importance of cost efficiency in public tenders: every amount saved is positive news for the state and taxpayers. Open procurement procedures and strong competition have the potential to sustainably improve the development of the Czech rail sector. At the same time, the projects are intended to make everyday travel easier for passengers and strengthen rail as a reliable mode of transport.

The approximately 15-kilometre-long line between Prague-Ruzyně and Kladno will be straightened, electrified and expanded to double track as part of the modernisation. Construction is scheduled to begin this spring, with completion planned for 2029. The contract was awarded to a consortium of several construction companies, whose bid of CZK 8.279 billion came in well below the originally estimated budget.

According to Tomáš Tóth, head of the Czech Railway Administration (Správa železnic), the modernisation will significantly improve transport quality – not only between the capital and Kladno, but also for commuters from the wider surrounding area. This will include improved connections to park-and-ride facilities. In addition, both train speeds and the capacity of the line will be significantly increased.
The section between Prague-Ruzyně and Kladno also represents the longest construction phase within the overall project of a modern rail connection between Prague, the airport and Kladno.
