With the launch of a new project in Prague 6, an innovative play concept is being permanently established in the Czech Republic for the first time. The focus is clearly on free, creative play—away from traditional playground structures.

On 8 April, the country’s first permanent adventure playground will open in Prague 6, Vypich (Břevnov), at the corner of Na Klášterním and Na Vypichu streets. Following successful pilot projects in Na Kocínce and Pod Juliskou, the internationally established concept is now being implemented on a permanent basis for the first time. The aim is to give children more freedom and actively involve them in shaping their play environment.

Unlike conventional playgrounds, the new area deliberately relies on simple materials and real tools. Pallets, planks, ropes, nets and even old fabrics are available, along with hammers, saws and nails. Under the supervision of specially trained staff, children can build their own constructions—from simple huts to more complex play structures.

According to district representatives, the primary focus is on fostering independence and creativity. Children decide for themselves what they want to do and how they spend their time. At the same time, they develop social skills, learn to solve problems and experience a direct sense of achievement through their own creations.

However, the adventure playground is not intended solely as a space for building and play. The offering is complemented by elements of nature-based play, including a “mud kitchen” and areas for growing fruit and vegetables. In addition, educational programmes with a focus on environmental education are planned in an outdoor classroom—for both individual visitors and school groups.

Safety is ensured by trained playworkers, who do not actively intervene in play but support children in handling tools and ensure that basic rules are followed. The concept is therefore also seen as a valuable complement to formal education, as it promotes motor and social skills in an open, practical environment.

The concept of the adventure playground originated in Denmark in 1943. In the Czech Republic, it was first tested in June 2024 in Prague 6 as part of a temporary project. Following positive feedback, additional temporary sites were introduced in 2025, including in Prague districts 3, 7 and 10, as well as in the city of Písek. Further permanent sites are already being planned.

The new adventure playground project at Vypich is being developed in cooperation between Prague 6, the initiative “Město přátelské k dětem”, and the House of Children and Youth Prague 6. A particular emphasis is placed on sustainability: primarily recycled materials are used, some of which come from public donations.
